Sons of Anarchy – “North Country” EP (Various Artists)

October 01, 2009 By: plgsiteadmin Category: Album Reviews

Apple iTunes has released an EP soundtrack from the FX television series “Sons of Anarchy”.  This 5 song EP is as hard as you would expect it to be, aside from the Audra Mae & The Forest Rangers’ bluegrass influenced cover of “Forever Young”.  Anvil & Frankie Perez’s certainly do right by The Who in their take on “Slip Kid”.  The EP goes for under $5 on iTunes, well worth a fin.  Click the iTunes button to listen to samples from this EP.   Curtis Stigers & The Forest Rangers - Sons of Anarchy: North Country - EP

There is a chill in the evening air.  The leaves are beginning to turn.  Baseball is heading for the post-season and football is in full swing.  Autumn has arrived.  It is a strange time of year.  We are down about the ending of summer; yet relieved at the passing of the dog days of summer and amazed by the changing foliage.  Such a mixture of emotions makes for great music!  You can sample all the songs in this playlist here: Playlistguru.com – Autumn iMix

Single Nugget – “Among the Living” by Anthrax

September 24, 2009 By: plgsiteadmin Category: Metal, Single Nugget

This track, off the same titled album, puts Steven King’s epic novel “The Stand” to music.  I had not read a King novel prior to hearing this song, but once I had I was off to the book store.  “Among the Living” retells King’s post apocalyptic tale of the Anti-Christ, AKA Randall Flagg, and the shaping of his designs for the world after most of its population has died from a super virus.  The perfect backdrop for a metal tune!  I have always placed Anthrax upon pedestal amongst speed metal artists for their ability to mix rapid cadence instrumentals with crisp, concise and well written lyrics.  In the annuls of speed metal comprehensible vocals has in many case been the exception rather than the rule.

You can listen to samples of “Among the Living”, and other great cuts off of the Among the Living album such as “I Am the Law”, “Indians” and “Caught in a Mosh” here:  Anthrax - Among the Living

Are you sick and tired of the debate over health care in America?  Well, the Guru has the cure for you with this set of sick tracks. Starting off with a sultry number from Peggy Lee, the classic “Fever”.  The tempo pick up from that point onward with Dr. John the Night Tripper tickling the keys.  Things get heady later on with the Grateful Dead jamming live with “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad”.  As the illness begins to fade the list closes out with two from Aerosmith and Van Halen.  So take 9 tracks and call me in the morning.

  1. Fever – Peggy Lee
  2. Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu – Dr. John
  3. Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) – Robert Palmer
  4. Doctor My Eyes – Jackson Browne
  5. Sick Again – Led Zeppelin
  6. Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad – The Grateful Dead
  7. I Don’t Need No Doctor – John Mayer
  8. Fever – Aerosmith
  9. Somebody Call Me a Doctor – Van Halen

Music Video: Queen, Who Wants to Live Forever (Live @ Wembley 1986)

Freddie Mercury really belts it out on this one.  I shared this with my Facebook friends last night, and have watched it about 10 times since.  If I had the use of a time machine for one round trip I could stop Hitler, tell Kennedy to duck or tell Lincoln that “Our American Cousin” was a dreadful play that he could afford to miss.  I would go to this concert instead.

Web Site Surfing: Smashing Pumpkins

September 17, 2009 By: plgsiteadmin Category: Links

The first posting after our summer hiatus is in the form of breaking news.  Smashing Pumpkins announces the plans for the new album titled ‘Teargarden by Kaleidyscope’.

The album will feature 44 songs, released in 4 song groups, the first release will be out around the Halloween timeframe.  Now here is the great news.  They will all be made available for free download.

To quote the Smashing Pumpkins website, “Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won’t have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.”.

The business model is to distribute the music free of charge, then to profit from the a song compilation box set once all the songs have been released.  Also, the band will tour in support of the new music set.  Nothing wrong with making a profit of some sorts, and Billy Corgan has shown an understanding of how the music industry has changed in the digital age.

You can learn more on the Smashing Pumpkins website.  Also, a great site to browse!

Paste Magazine also released today a great article/interview with Billy Corgan.

Playlist: INDIEpendence Day

July 04, 2009 By: Laura Livecchi Category: Links, Playlists

The fourth of July is upon us again!  Break out the Bar-b-que and the fireworks. Of course the spirit of freedom and the spirit of music should not be forgotten! Hubert Humphrey said “We need an America with the wisdom of experience.  But we must not let America grow old in spirit.” In that same youthful spirit, here is a playlist which includes Indie Bands like The Fratellis, The Killers, MGMT, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkey and others. Thier existence is made possible by the county where anything is possible. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Single Nugget – “Rock the Casbah” by The Clash

July 02, 2009 By: plgsiteadmin Category: Rock/Pop Singles, Single Nugget

Nothing deep here.  Simply a rock/pop tune made for the MTV generation (when they played music).  This is one catchy song.  You hear it once in a blue moon, but when you do it is stuck in your head for days.  The video is images are great.  You won’t see a Hasidic Jew and an Arab cruising down the highway in a stretch sedan convertible again anytime soon. Single Nugget – “Candy’s Room” by Bruce Springsteen

June 25, 2009 By: gurueditor Category: Classic Rock Singles, Single Nugget

Off the top of my head, this is only Springsteen song I can think of that is partly from a woman’s perspective. Although conveyed by Candy’s lover, when he quotes Candy he becomes Candy. We have all mimicked someone when telling a tale to a third party and Bruce does the same here. It is a fine performance on his part and he plays both roles very convincingly. The lover nervous with excitement; and the object of his desire, the slightly tattered and experienced Candy.  Notice how when the lover is talking, the piano keys are being tickled like someone tip-toeing on thin ice. When Candy is being quoted an avalanche of sound with a hard driving beat assaults the listener. Both vocals and music combine to illustrate the two characters. Truly my favorite off of the Darkness On the Edge of Town album.   Check it out on iTunes. Bruce Springsteen - Darkness On the Edge of Town - Candy's Room

Single Nugget – “Wrap It Up” by The Fabulous Thunderbirds

June 22, 2009 By: plgsiteadmin Category: Rock/Pop Singles, Single Nugget

Thinking of my father today. Yesterday was Father’s Day, but dad has been gone for 15 years now. He was taken before his time back in 1994 at the young age of 50. The big C is a mean mother. His musical tastes took him down the back alleys of Doo-Wop and Motown. When I was in high school I tried to introduce him to something new. I bought him The Fabulous Thunderbirds cassette Tuff Enuff (remember cassettes?) as a gift and he really dug it, “Wrap It Up” in particular.   Salvatore, this one goes out to you.
